Industry Accreditations Separate the IAQ Experts from the Rest

PeopleWhen buildings have an indoor air quality (IAQ) problem it can lead to a host of serious issues. Health problems, decreased productivity, loss of property values, environmental regulations and lawsuits can all result. Many times when IAQ issues become apparent in a building they have been caused by a combination of factors that can encompass building design, HVAC systems, structural problems and numerous other contributing factors.

When IAQ issues due happen it can be a daunting task for a commercial or residential property owners or managers to determine what type of environmental professional can resolve their problem. Currently there are perhaps tens of thousands of people, and companies, claiming to be IAQ or Mold Experts. There are no federal regulations and few states that have any controls related to the industry.

Fortunately there is an independent certifying body for IAQ professionals that the public can turn to in order to distinguish between the true professionals in the field and those that may not be qualified. The American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC) has more than 4,000 certified professional in the United States and abroad at the moment.

According to the ACAC website these professionals, “… work in fields like mold inspection, mold remediation, asbestos removal, infection control consulting, home inspection, indoor air quality management and microbial claims adjusting. ACAC designations require extensive knowledge and field experience. They also require 40 hours of continuing professional development every two years. ACAC certifications are board awarded by a nationwide panel of industry peers.”

The ACAC has been raising the bar for IAQ professionals since the original association was founded in 1994. It is currently designated a not-for-profit 501(c) 6 entity and continues its mission as it “…promotes awareness, education and certification for professionals. Our mission is to establish credible certification programs that provide value to certificants, their clients and the public. It is our goal to serve the public interest with integrity as an independent certifying body.”
